The Globie Awards

We knew The Globie Awards had to be all about community.

As a small nonprofit news startup, The Seattle Globalist was in need of their first large fundraiser and community event.

Working with the founders and board, I developed the awards show concept to celebrate the writers, youth, and best reporting from the year.

The 2013 Globie Awards

The Plan

We chose the historic Washington Hall in the Central District, a cultural hub for many of our writers and community.

We then partnered with local writer and comedian Ahamefule Oluo as our host, Off The Rez made fresh tacos from their truck, Hilliard’s kept our bar well stocked, and Full Tilt Ice Cream even created custom globally-inspired flavors.

The Design

With our micro-event budget, I dreamt up a DIY-with-heart design plan by mixing high with lows, golds with butcher paper, art deco with chalkboards.

I handmade the writer awards using snow globes, clay, cookie cutters, gold paint and lots of super glue.

We knew this wasn’t going to be a 5-star hotel style fundraiser. So instead of shying away from our DIY approach, we made it the focal point.

The Party

We couldn’t spend big, so we made big. Literally.

Big indoor clouds, big GLOBIES marquee sign, big (money raising) carnival games, and custom crafts galore.

Everything was handmade either with my own two hands or those of awesome volunteers.

The 2014 Globie Awards

The Plan

We lined up Seattle standup comedian Yogi Paliwal as host, Sam Choy’s Poke to the Max dished up Hawaiian classics, and we returned to the historic Washington Hall to party down.

The Design

Working with a micro-budget again, we relied on shades of blue, pops of red, and ocean textures to transform Washington Hall into our out to sea theme.

I collaborated with a 3D print artist to create custom snow globes for the award winners and I designed a custom light plot to blanket the venue in a wave textures and a blue glow.

The Party

Oversized props like the photobooth boat and giant jellyfish that floated above the guests helped transform the hall without breaking the bank.
